The amazing Singapore shopping complex on Orchard Road

Ngee Ann City is something of a shopping centre landmark on Orchard Road, having delivered brand names, book stores, beauty parlours and restaurants to well-heeled shoppers since the last century.

The mall also boasts an art and creativity section and the Takashimaya department store over seven levels. Designer labels are aplenty including Cartier, Hugo Boss, Dior and Gucci. Also represented are trendy European high street brands such as Zara, Mango and Ted Baker although the accent at Ngee Ann City is undoubtedly on Japanese brands. If you fancy a bite to eat then there’s lots of choice with a world selection of food and beverages on offer.

The main tenant at Ngee Ann City is Takashimaya department store occupying Basement 2 to Level 4 and housing fashion greats such as Bvlgari, Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren, Chloe, Gucci and Hermès. Spread across the other levels are 130 specialty stores selling the latest in designer fashion including Calvin Klein and Juicy Couture. There are also plenty of health and beauty stores, accessory outlets and Asia’s largest book store Kinokuniya; plus Best Denki Japan’s electronic retail titan, is also here.

Food

From snacks to five-star dining, eating at Ngee Ann City is well catered for. There are plenty of coffee shops in which to rest your weary shopping feet and lots of Asian cuisines to enjoy over a leisurely lunch. Asian restaurants dominate although there are some great western flavours including pasta eateries and burger joints. Some popular restaurants here are Angus House, Cedele Coca Restaurant, Ginseng Chicken & BBQ, Crystal Jade Kitchen, etc.

Tonkichi is a locals favourite, popular with Singaporeans and resident expats. Famed for juicy pork dishes, Tonkichi is known throughout Taiwan for serving the best Tonkatsu; the Singapore branch also delivers with Pork Loin Katsu being the diners favourite, more unusual items to try include fried Oysters. Tonkichi will certainly fill you up and additionally is excellent value for money.

Or Crystal Jade Ginseng Chicken & BBQ There are quite a number of Crystal Jade restaurants at Ngee Ann City but the one favoured by those in the know is the Korean version — Ginseng Chicken and BBQ. The tender chicken ginseng soup is highly recommended and served with an assortment of accompaniments including Kimchi, salad and veggies. The atmosphere is loud and vibrant with superb friendly service, a great experience if you are with a large party or dining with children.

Coffee Club is popular Western fare including chicken pie, spaghetti bolognese and Mexican quesadillas is served daily here. Going beyond an extensive coffee menu which includes Turkish coffee, café style food is also available including a range of breakfasts. The Coffee Club offers great views of Singapore from a high vantage point and is a good place to meet, eat and catch up with friends.

There is much more to Ngee Ann City than shopping and dining, Takashimaya Square is frequently home to market-style bazaars and shopping events, whilst outside the complex Civic Plaza hosts events for up to 3,000 people. Concerts, fashion shows and carnivals regularly take place at this giant semi-circle which forms part of Ngee Ann City. Events are quite often free and also include sporting activities such as rock climbing, rodeo, jousting and sumo wrestling. There is also a fully-equipped fitness gym inside the mall and an art and creativity section called iFORUM located on the 4th Floor.
