Whether it’s good food, rich heritage or accessibility and amenities, Balestier has it all.
Once a humble sugarcane plantation, Balestier is today a neighbourhood oozing eclectic charm where gleaming shopping malls have sprung up next to pre-war shophouses, historical buildings and famous eateries. And right at the heart of it all is CP Residences’ Domus listing.
A melting pot of cultures
A history lesson awaits just six minutes away by foot at the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial, which is dedicated to Dr Sun Yat Sen, often hailed as the father of modern China.
It was in this two-storey colonial-style villa where Dr Sun planned his revolutionary activities in the early 1900s, which eventually overthrew the Qing dynasty and led to the birth of modern-day China. The Memorial Hall was gazetted as a national monument in 1994.
Just a stone’s throw away is the grand Maha Sasanaramsi Burmese Buddhist Temple, a Burmese Buddhist temple built outside of Myanmar in the traditional style. It was founded in 1878 by a Burmese and moved to its current Tai Gin Road premises from Kinta Road in 1988. Visitors to the main hall are greeted by a 3.3m-tall marble Buddha statue, which was carved from a 10-tonne white marble block found near Mandalay in Myanmar. It is the largest such statue outside of Myanmar.

Packed with flavour and history
Several F&B operators in Balestier boast a rich history too. For instance, Loong Fatt Bakery has been calling its corner shop at 639 Balestier Road home since 1948. For over 70 years, it has been churning out freshly baked sweet treats by hand that draw customers from all over Singapore. These range from its signature tau sar piah (bean paste pastries) to seasonal goodies like pineapple tarts.
For a proper meal or more options, head down to Balestier Market and Food Centre. Built in 1922, it is the only rural market building left in Singapore. It was used as a distribution centre for food rations during the Japanese Occupation and now serves a wide variety of food – from classic chicken rice and popiah to modern fusion dishes.
