As a professional athlete, para archer Nur Syahidah Alim is always prepared to make sacrifices and lifestyle changes to enhance her game. The 36-year-old, who clinched a historic gold medal at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships in the Netherlands, is Singapore’s first world champion archer.
To prepare for this year’s Tokyo Paralympics, Syahidah decided to move closer to her training ground in the National Stadium. After spotting an ad on a Beach Road studio apartment under CP Residences at City Gate, she promptly moved in in May. The three-month stay saved her much travelling time and featured other benefits.
“With the National Stadium only one MRT station away, I was able to focus more on my training. There was also space for me to train (in the apartment) when needed, and I could do extra workouts at the gym and swimming pool,” said Syahidah, who also enjoyed the sights and sounds of Haji Lane from her balcony.
The amenities around City Gate, a mixed development comprising residential and retail units, were also a boon. The condo sits on top of a shopping mall, which offers direct access to a 24-hour supermarket and other shops.
Best of all, the facilities at City Gate, which is linked to Nicoll Highway MRT station, proved to be inclusive and disabled-friendly. Born with a form of cerebral palsy which affects her lower body, Syahidah is wheelchair-bound. But she had no problems getting around the property.
“There are ramps and lifts that made it easier for me to travel to my training grounds – especially with my bulky equipment. The facilities, like gyms and swimming pools, were also easy to access,” she added.
Syahidah is also very grateful for the supportive CP Residences community.
She was concerned at first that the noise from her equipment would make it hard for her to train in the apartment. Thankfully, her neighbour was very understanding and told her to carry on with her training.
“I was afraid it would be noisy for him, especially since all of us had to work from home due to COVID-19 restrictions. To show my appreciation for his support, I would bake some brownies and give goodies to him,” Syahidah revealed.
During festive seasons, CP Residences staff also make sure to leave care packages for the residents. Syahidah remembers coming home from a hard day of training one day to find a box of Hari Raya treats waiting for her. She counts that as one of the key highlights of her stay with CP Residences.
